Japanese Undōkai (Sports Day)
In the U.S., we have field days at school, where organized games, friendly competition, and fun abound. In Japan, they take this event to the next level with Undōkai!
“Undōkai” (運動会), which literally means School Sports Day, is a popular annual event in Japan originally held around October 10th on Taiiku no Hi (Health and Sports Day), a national holiday that promotes health and fitness. Students, teachers, and even parents come together for races, games, and team competitions. More than just sports, Undōkai fosters teamwork, school spirit, and community—making it a highlight of the school year.
