Dr. Eric Simpson

Dr. Eric Simpson has served Maryville College as a lecturer in music education and director of bands since 2015. He earned a bachelor of music education from Stetson University and a master of music degree in music education from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. He received a Ph.D. in music education from Florida State University.

As director of bands, Simpson conducts the Tartanband: an ensemble of student instrumentalists who create vibrant performances in the wind and percussion medium. Simpson also leads the MC³ Band, which was established in 1992 and includes working musicians, educators, high school and college students, business professionals and retirees from the local community.

Previously, he was an assistant professor of music education at Texas Christian University, where he was also coordinator of instrumental music education and associate conductor of the university’s concert band. His primary research interests include temporal aspects of musical evaluation, teacher misconduct and sociological influences on music education. He has been published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education, The Instrumentalist and The Florida Music Director. He has also served as conductor and clinician for a number of bands throughout the southern United States.
