Adjunct Instructor of Music, Flute

Nathalie Simper joined Maryville College as the Adjunct Professor of Flute in 2020. She earned a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University and a Master of Music from University of Tennessee – Knoxville. 

Mrs. Simper has a diverse background in solo, chamber, and ensemble performance. She regularly performs on flute and piccolo with local orchestras, including the Knoxville Symphony, Oak Ridge Symphony, Johnson City Symphony, and Symphony of the Mountains. She has been a finalist for several of the Florida Flute Assocation’s Masterclass Competitions. She is an active member of the Florida Flute Association, Flute Society of Washington, National Flute Association, and East Tennessee Band & Orchestra Association. 

As a teacher, Mrs. Simper has fostered a supportive community of more than 20 young flutists in the greater Knoxville area . Students of Mrs. Simper consistently place in local and regional competitions and go on to study music in colleges and universities across the country. Her pedagogy focuses on turning musical discipline into confident living through overall wellness and mindfulness.

Mrs. Simper is an advocate for music education and developing an appreciation for those who have come before. A grand student of the legendary British flautist Geoffrey Gilbert, she was the research assistant for the documentary Geoffrey Gilbert: Gentleman of the Flute. She continues to honor his legacy by sharing his contributions inside and outside the flute world.
