Mark Twain once wrote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness - all foes to real understanding.” Recognizing the validity of that statement, Maryville College believes a period of travel and study outside the United States should be a part of one's education whenever possible.
Confronting other cultures and viewpoints, learning about the customs and practices in other societies, coping with unfamiliar surroundings in a language not fully one's own can do much to deepen insights and broaden perspectives. Such experience can also foster remarkable personal growth. A range of opportunities for guided travel and study is available. Short-term possibilities come through experiential travel with a small group of students and faculty. For more extended periods, however, Maryville College maintains exchange programs with several overseas institutions and is a member of the International Student Exchange Program.
Students should begin the process of exploring study abroad opportunities as freshmen, since most application deadlines occur early in the sophomore year. Students receive support from the Center for International Education before, during and after their study abroad program. Scholarships for study abroad are available.
The Center for International Education (CIE) is also proud to welcome students from around the world. We provide a variety of resources and services to help international students make the most of their university experience. The IPO offers international student orientation programs, international and exchange student advising, a variety of social, cultural and educational programs throughout the year, and referrals to other campus services to assist with issues related to health, housing, language, immigration and student development. The IPO also acts as the advisor to the Global Citizenship Organization.
