MC art majors present fall 2021 senior show

Nov. 22, 2021

The work of three Maryville College art majors will be on display Dec. 1 through Dec. 15 in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Blackberry Farm Gallery and William “Ed” Harmon Gallery, as part of the fall 2021 senior art show.

The show will include the following Maryville College seniors:

Robert Bryant ’22 of Maryville, Tenn.: “Hellenic Divinity” (mixed media, oil, acrylic on canvas)

“My body of work is meant to depict Hellenic gods and goddesses. My goal for this work was to help serve as a jumping off point in learning about the Hellenic pantheon, both for myself and for others. In this, I wanted to center my work around the more obscure deities, such as Nyx and Hypnos, while also depicting some of the more well-known ones such as Hermes and Aphrodite. As well as depicting Hellenic gods, this also served as a study of famous artworks and painting techniques. Hopefully these pieces serve as a jumping off point for others into the realm of Hellenic mythology and deities just as much as it was for me.”

Cooper Lawson ’21 of Knoxville, Tenn.: “Tarot Del Toro” (acrylic gouache on Bristol)

“This collection is my study on the work of the Spanish director, Guillermo del Toro. Like myself, del Toro finds beauty in the strange and macabre with childlike glee, curiosity, and wonder. Each piece is inspired by his stories and characters in the context of the traditional tarot card deck, and may just reveal something unexpected to those who select them. It is my hope that one may find a strange, twisted and possibly beautiful part of themselves within the cards, as I have found for myself.

Paige Shepherd ’21 of Seymour, Tenn.: “Yon sèl la pèdi” (air dry clay, foam clay, acrylic paint)

“The purpose of my thesis is to reconstruct features based on anatomical and artistic knowledge of the human face.”

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the gallery on Fri., Dec. 3 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

“The senior exhibit features works the students have prepared as part of their Senior Study requirement,” said Dr. Carl Gombert, MC professor of art. “The senior project is an independent study that encourages students to create a meaningful body of work devoted to a particular subject or theme. The senior project spans two semesters and involves six credit hours of work.”
