Dr. Bogart in President's Office


Dr. William T. (Tom) Bogart is the eleventh president of Maryville College, in Maryville, Tennessee, having assumed his duties on July 1, 2010. He previously served for eight years as Dean of Academic Affairs at York College of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Bogart holds a B.A. degree in Economics and Mathematical Sciences from Rice University where he graduated in 1985. He received his A.M. (1987) and Ph.D. (1990) in Economics from Princeton University where his work was recognized with the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Tax Association. He completed studies at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University in the summer of 2010.

Dr. Bogart’s professional history includes work at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) from 1990 to 2002 as a member of the faculty in the Weatherhead School of Management. While at CWRU, he served as chair of the Department of Economics and as a research associate of the Center for Regional Economic Issues. He received numerous teaching awards during his time at CWRU.

Dr. Bogart’s research interests include state and local government tax and spending decisions, local government economic development and land use policy, and the effects of school redistricting on real estate markets. He has written three books: The Economics of Cities and Suburbs, Don't Call It Sprawl: Metropolitan Structure in the Twenty-first Century, and The False Promise of Green Energy.

Dr. Bogart is active in the community. He was a member of the Leadership Blount Class of 2012 and the Leadership Knoxville Class of 2014. He currently serves on the Smoky Mountain Tourism Development Authority and on the Government Relations Committee of the Blount Chamber Partnership. He is currently a member of the executive committee of the USA South Athletic Conference and a member of the executive committee of the Appalachian College Association. Previous board service includes United Way of Blount County, Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, and Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association.     

He is married to Mary and they have one daughter, Elizabeth.  They are members of Broadway United Methodist Church.
