Friends of the College Woods

string(7) "friends"

We received grants from the Tennessee River Basin Network to restore the woods around Duncan Branch in the Maryville College Woods. We are thankful for the funding provided by TVA, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Mainspring Conservative Trust. Funds from this grant were used to purchase tools and native plants as well as reduce sediment erosion into Duncan Branch.

We had another great work day down along Duncan Branch cutting and uprooting Chinese Privet and Bush Honeysuckle. This extended the restored area we began in early 2022.

February 19, 2022

More than 60 people showed up to uprooting the previously cut Chinese Privet and Bush Honeysuckle and plant natives including wild azaleas, royal ferns, maidenhair ferns, beauty berry, and hearts-a-bustin’ along Duncan Branch. We will likely have a work day later this year, so keep an eye out for that.

January 22, 2022

We had a wonderful time removing invasive/non-native plants! 56 people showed up (ages from 5 to 75), and we tremendously improved the health of the MC woods! Next time, I will have more small and medium tee-shirts for the children that help!
