An introduction to children's literature, with attention devoted to picture books, including fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and non-print materials. Specific topics discussed include literary styles, genres, the relationship of art and text, historical development of literature for children, the role of culturally diverse literature in the classroom, and criteria for evaluating contemporary literature. The course will explore ways to use literature to create engaging classroom experiences. (3 credit hours)
