Why study Data Analysis at MC?

Data analysis and analytical thinking are among the most in-demand job skills and, as with any skill, mastery requires many hours of practice.  The interdisciplinary Minor in Data Analysis develops that mastery through applying current software to implement statistical methods and data visualization techniques to answer research questions in a variety of disciplines.

The minor can serve as a valuable complement to any major that involves research and, because developing expertise in data analysis requires challenging assumptions, considering alternative explanations for results, and evaluating implications of conclusions, fits well as part of a liberal arts education.

To address research questions in a variety of disciplines, students will be able to

  1. Design studies and connect the design to the scope of inferences.
  2. Identify and apply appropriate statistical methods and data visualizations.
  3. Use current software in the practical application of data analysis to real-world situations.

The Data Analysis minor requires a minimum of 16 hours in courses that focus on the analysis of data using current software.

Required courses include:

Minor and Minor-Related Courses

STA 120: Introductory Statistics(4 hrs)

Four courses from the following:*
