General Notes

I’ve now lived at the same address (in Cottonwood, AZ) for longer than at any other address. I still enjoy life in the Northern Arizona desert.
Last December, my son and I published the book, “Andy Speaks.” In it we relate life with his autism. My Author Name for this book is: Carolyn L Coen, if you want to look it up on amazon. If you read the book, we would appreciate it if you’d write a review on amazon.
Other than that, I split my time between writing things for another book (which I enjoy) and managing the medical providers here in Yavapai County (which I do not enjoy!).

Sr. and Roslin Thorne (Arnold) Talmage. Due to potential war with Japan in 1940, the Talmage family moved to the United States where his father served several churches in the southeast. Following high school at Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan, John returned to the United States for college, first at Rice University and then Maryville College in Tennessee. When Elographics/EloTouch was sold to Raychem and moved to California, John worked for Comstock, another small startup company in Oak Ridge. From early childhood, John was a stamp collector, focusing on stamps of Korea and Japan. For several years, he was president of the Oak Ridge Stamp Club, and for many years served as secretary-treasurer of the international Korea Stamp Society. In addition to stamps, John’s other interests were genealogy, history, and travel. In 1962, John married his Maryville College sweetheart, Sylvia Smith of West Lawn, PA. Elizabeth Spining Taylor
Class of 1961
Memoriam

Elizabeth Spining Taylor was born in Ganado, Arizona at Sage Memorial Hospital. Her parents served at Ganado Mission as Christian missionaries to the Navajo people. At age 15 she was enrolled at Wasatch Academy, a Presbyterian boarding high- school in Mt. Pleasant Utah. After briefly attending Maryville College in Tennessee, she subsequently obtained a teaching certificate from what was then Arizona State Teachers College, now Northern Arizona University. There she met her future husband, Lloyd Taylor, one of 6 brothers from Holbrook, Arizona. They were married in 1961 at the Ganado Presbyterian Church where she was baptized and grew up. Numerous teaching positions followed in Southern Arizona and New Jersey. A teaching position for Lloyd in Page brought them back to Arizona, and in 1975 they moved to Flagstaff to assist Lloyd’s brother in restoration of the historic Weatherford Hotel. During those years a daughter, Ann Marie was born, followed by twins Christopher and Christine. Her husband subsequently left the Weatherford Hotel partnership and established a southwestern tour company, “Seven Wonders Tours”. Libby was an active partner in that enterprise, and as her family often said, she had “a gift for gab”, a skill that enhanced the enjoyment of “Seven Wonders” clients as they traveled in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. Libby more recently moved to Phoenix to be closer to family, and passed away at the Beatitudes Campus in February 2024. She was 84 years old.

Sandra Poole Winn
Class of 1961
All Notes Memoriam

Sandra Poole Winn passed away unexpectedly from a stroke on October 27, 2016 in Austin, TX at the age of 77. Sandra, lovingly known as just Sandy, was born on May 26, 1939 in Kingsport, TN to Carl Edward Poole and Bernice Edwards Poole. She attended Coker College in Hartsville, SC and graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, TN in 1961. Sandy married Ronald Eugene Winn in Kingsport, TN on June 17, 1961. She had a career as a Teacher, Principle, Children’s Minister, and Family Counselor. Sandy, affectionately called Nonni by her grandchildren, Sandy-Bear by the children in her Hope Chapel children’s ministry and Mom by the many women she discipled over the years, lived a life full of love, service and pouring herself into others. Her deep abiding faith in God was the cornerstone of how she lived; she was a beautiful channel of God’s grace and love. She loved people extraordinarily, with all of her heart; not one walked away from time spent with her feeling anything less than extra special! Sandy invested over lunches, coffee and daily posts on Facebook; she volunteered at her grandchildren’s schools regularly; she was a dedicated and active member in the churches she and Ron attended including Allandale Baptist Church and Hope Chapel as well as the ministry of Central Texas Tres Dias. Sandy served alongside Ron in missions work here in Austin, as well in Guatemala and Eastern Europe. To know Sandy was to love her; to be known by her was to have a true friend, a prayer warrior, a listening ear, a treasure of wisdom to soak up, a cheerleader and an encourager extraordinaire! Sandy finished well! Sandy is survived by her husband Ron Winn of 55 years; her sons: Scott Carlton Winn and wife Amy; Brian Patrick Winn and wife Janine; and Roger Edward Winn; and her grandchildren: Lydia, Claire, Bradley, Thomas, Rebekah, and Patrick.
