Barbara Blair Easter age 93 of Lenoir City passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018. She was a 1948 graduate of Maryville College. Barbara taught music at Knoxville High School in the mid 1950’s. She was a highly sought after vocalist and was the music director and soloist at Trinity United Methodist Church for many years. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald L. “Cotton” Easter; her parents, Marion Monroe Blair and Sara Perkey Blair; 3 sisters: Ruth, Almeda and Sally. She is survived by her three sons: Ronald L. Easter, Jr. (Katherine) of Atlantic Beach, FL, Charles Monroe “Roe” Easter (Tiffany) of Decatur, GA and Alexander Blair Easter of Boston, MA; several nieces and nephews. Thomas Gerald Eberhard, known to his loved ones as Tom, passed away on September 26, 2023, in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 85. Born on July 15, 1938, in Cincinnati, Tom was a beloved member of his community who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Tom was a truly giving man, known for his compassion, generosity, and quick wit. He had a remarkable ability to bring smiles to the faces of those around him with his sense of humor. Tom was not only a fantastic friend, but also a loving brother, husband, uncle, father, and grandpa (Tutu) to his fortunate family members.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane Eberhard, sister Jacque Shear (Doug Shear), and his loving daughters, Lisa Eberhard Pugh (Armour Pugh), Dana Eberhard Kelley (Brian Kelley), and Hallie Eberhard (Kurt Searer). He is also survived by his cousin, John Spooner (and the late Eydie Spooner); his nieces and nephews Kevin Shear, Heather Wilson, Linda Santiago, Jim Powers, Chris Powers, James Powers, Keith Powers, and Alexander Powers. Tom will be fondly remembered by his adoring grandchildren, Lauren Dowrey, Hannah Dowrey, Sophie Dowrey, Jake Tufts, Ryan Tufts, Emma Kelley, and Rohan Kelley.

Tom attended and later taught at Cincinnati Country Day School. He graduated from Maryville College in 1960, where he pursued higher education and was a founding member of the “KT Group” for alumni. He valued learning and embraced the opportunities his education provided him. Later, he owned his own printing business, was a Kiwanis member, and a Sycamore Township Trustee.

Tom’s family would like to recognize and thank his loving nurse, Theresa Schoonover and her entire family, who made the last few years of Tom’s life incredibly special.

The family would also like to thank Sycamore Presbyterian Church, where he and his wife were active members. Tom’s memory will be cherished by his family and friends, who will forever remember him as a kind and loving individual.

Mildred H. Edgerton passed away on August 28, 2003 of Arlington, VA. A resident of the DC area since 1951, she is the former wife of the late John D. Edgerton. She is survived by her brother, Keith Hester of Cross Plains, WI; five nieces and nephews, and eight great-nieces and nephews.

Another Great Baldwin Hall GIrls Reunion was held Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 at Lake Tansi Resort, Crossville. is living and Interpreting in NYC. She is currently interpreting 6 days per week, working three days of the week with New York’s Department of Education and free lancing the other three days. This free lancing is with Empire Interpreting Services in NY. In addition to interpreting, she is taking advantage of living in NY and joined a Deaf Theatre group, the New York Deaf Theatre. Their first show, Jekyll and Hyde opened November 7, 2014. She is the assistant stage manager and reportedly is “loving it so much!” She has met and worked with incredible deaf actors and the entire play is in ASL.

Mt. Airy-Octavia Blades Edwards, 95, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Northern Hospital of Surry Co. She was born June 12, 1921 in Coatesville, PA to the late Ansley and Florence Bailey Blades. Mrs. Edwards was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy and retired from Stokes Co. School system as a Librarian. She enjoyed traveling, playing the piano and keeping up with family and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Edwards and a grandson, Chad Midkiff. Surviving are her children, Phillip & Linda Edwards and Diana & Tim Smith; four grandchildren, Edward Scott Edwards (Sarah), Adam Edwards (Sarah), Brian Midkiff (Michelle) and Nicole Aaron; great-grandchildren, Dylan Midkiff, Chase Vaden, Caylee Aaron, Kelsey Edwards, Alysia Edwards, Destiny Edwards and Charlie Gordy. Mary Jane Long Edwards, passed away from this life on December 28, 2015.

Elenora Easterly Edwards was born in LaFollette, Tennessee to Guy and Lucille Easterly, Guy was Publisher/Editor of The LaFollette Press and instilled in Elenora a love of writing, news, and a good story, leading her to pursue a career in journalism. After graduating from LaFollette High School in 1961, she attended Maryville College where she was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. She earned a degree in English from Maryville College in 1965 before attending graduate school at the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri at Columbia. While in graduate school, Elenora worked on the city desk of the Columbia Missourian, the local city newspaper published at the school.

Elenora began as a reporter for the Courier News of Clinton in 1970, and worked her way up to News Editor, a position she held until 1981 when her son, Ben was born. Elenora also served as Editor of The Tennessee Press, a publication of the Tennessee Press Association, from 1991 through 2013. She was a Trustee of the Tennessee Press Foundation from 2014 until 2022. A former President of the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalism and former board member of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government, Elenora most recently served as President of the Timely Topics Club. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton where she sang in the choir. She loved her work, family, friends, and most of all, her son Ben, who she cared for until the time of her passing.

Elenora is preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Lucille Easterly, her husband Thomas Edwards, and nephew Guy Tucker. She will be greatly missed by her son, Ben, sister, Helen Anne Tucker, numerous cousins, extended family, countless friends, and the community she served. Her joyful spirit, easy smile, and enthusiasm for life will be remembered by all with whom she came in contact.

Shelby and Tyler met in 2010 at Maryville College, both students of the ASL-English Interpreting program. After graduating in 2013, Tyler and Shelby moved to New York City and, shortly after, founded their own interpreting agency for the Deaf- Inclusive Communication Services (ICS). To date, ICS remains a pillar in the NYC community as a leading agency for affordable equal-access accommodations for the Deaf, Deaf-blind, and hard-of-hearing. In 2021, Shelby and Tyler launched their second business together, Eclipse Scheduling, LLC, an innovative online software focused on improving how interpreting and caption agencies manage their services and providers. Shelby and Tyler are eternally grateful to MC for their rounded liberal arts education, to Peggy Maher for providing such exceptional professional training and career readiness, and to the universe/fate for having introduced the two and leading them to where they are today.

Frank M. Eggers, 78, of Memphis, TN, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2023.
A celebration of Life service celebrating Frank’s life will be conducted by Dr. George Roberton on Thursday May 18 at 11:30am at Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to The American Heart Association or to Second Presbyterian Church.

Frank was born on February 17, 1945, in Maryville, TN to Fontella and Frank Eggers. He married Sandy (Johnson) Eggers on June 16, 1968. Frank obtained his undergraduate degree from Maryville College and was a Justin Potter scholarship student at Vanderbilt College of Medicine. He was a flight surgeon in the navy for 2 ½ years. He completed radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati; he was a practicing neuroradiologist for 45 years, serving both on Vanderbilt’s faculty and at Midsouth Imaging and Therapeutics in Memphis. He loved to travel and loved cheering on his favorite sports teams, especially those on which his children and grandchildren played.

Surviving are his loving wife Sandy Eggers of Memphis, TN, daughter Leann (Matt) Linam of Atlanta, GA and son Hamilton (Ashley) Eggers of Rossville, TN, beloved granddaughters Grace Caroline Linam, Lilli Eggers, and grandsons Drew Linam, Sam Linam, and Hamilton Eggers. Frank was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Ann Eiff, 78, of Athens, went home to be home with the Lord on October 31, 2022. She held both FAA pilot and A&P mechanic ratings, earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryville College and a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As an aircraft mechanic, she worked for Air Illinois Airlines, Southern Illinois University Flight program and American Trans air Airlines.

Mary Ann was a pioneer in the field of women in aviation and taught as a professor in Aeronautical Engineering Technology at Purdue University before her retirement. While at Purdue she coached the first colligate flight team to win the prestigious Air Race Classic (Powder Puff Derby) women’s cross country air race. She was a founding board member of Women in Aviation International and served as the organization’s Scholarship chair, awarding over a million dollars in scholarships to aspiring future aviation professionals as the organization grew to its present size of over 15,000 international members. Mary Ann earned a Silver Beaver award for her longtime service to the Boy Scouts Egyptian Council, also serving as a leader of High School aged Scouts under an Aviation, a Search and Rescue and later a Sailing Explorer Post. She was awarded the 2004 Leadership Award at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Oshkosh Fly-in, which was presented to her by Harrison Ford, for her long history of encouraging and enabling young people in pursuit of aviation careers. In retirement she was a member of the McMinn County Amateur Radio Club with the amateur callsign W8MAE. Mary Ann was dedicated to the growth and education of youth and adults alike, and especially enjoyed helping individuals that strive to break the stereotypical boundaries.

Surviving her are her husband of 56 years, Dr. Gary Eiff; daughter, Christina (Mark) Ridings; son, Paul (Gloria) Eiff; granddaughter, Kimberly Bruce; grandsons Austin Ridings, Logan Privette, Byron Eiff, Corben Eiff; and two great-grandsons.

Coach Don Eili retired in Oct. 2016 from coaching after 46 years as a wrestling coach at the collegiate level. He began his career as wrestling coach at MC. He coached for ten years with a record of 93-35 and 4 ties. His thirty-one yeas at Carson Newman College netted a record of 376 wins, 243 losses and 3 ties. He completed six more years at ETSU with a record of 53-39-0 where he retired in 2016. He is one of only seven coaches in the history of collegiate wrestling to reach or surpass 500 wins. He was inducted in the MC Wall of Fame and the NAIA National Hall of Fame in 2000, the NCAA National Hall of Fame in 2007 and accumulated 41 consecutive years with at least one wrestler to qualify for the National Championships through the Regional Qualifiers. In all, 203 wresters got to participate in the National Championships with 28 earning All-American honors and 21 others won National Championships.

Donald P. Elia died Wednesday afternoon, March 27th, 2024, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. His death was peaceful, with his wife Colleen and children Christy and John by his side. He was 83.

Don grew up in New Jersey, where he and his sister were raised by their single mother, Dorothy Beatty. He graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1958. After high school, he traveled to Tennessee to attend Maryville College, where he would compete in wrestling, football, and track. Though Don was an eager athlete, he wasn’t quite ready for the rigors of academic life; he left school for a while, grew up a bit, and married Colleen. They moved to Maryville so Don could work and coach while he finished his degree in Education. He went on to complete a Master of Science in College Student Personnel and Counseling from the University of Tennessee in 1973. He worked briefly at the McCallie School in Chattanooga before landing the job at Carson-Newman College (now Carson-Newman University) that would define his career. At Carson-Newman he established a wrestling program and worked as the Director of Financial Aid. From 1978 until his retirement in 2008, Don coached and mentored generations of wrestlers and helped families afford higher education. After retirement he created a non-profit to support wrestling in East Tennessee and traveled back and forth for hours to support the Club Wrestling team at East Tennessee State University. For his decades of contributions to the wrestling community, Don was inducted into the Maryville College Wall of Fame, the Carson-Newman University Hall of Fame, the NAIA Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Beyond his love of wrestling and coaching, Don was a loyal New York Giants fan, an ever-optimistic golfer, and a proud father and grandfather. He could find his way anywhere without a map. He built things without designs. Don’s life was in many ways a thing of myth and legend, some no doubt of his own making, and his family wouldn’t have it any other way.

Don is survived by his wife Colleen; children Christy Brooks (husband Rob) and John (wife Alice); five amazing grandchildren (Thomas, Julian, Jack, Emmylou, and Pete); and his sister Barbara Chiu (husband Vince).

Writes in to report that she retired in 2014. Her husband, a detective with the the Sarasota Sheriffs department, passed away suddenly in 2012. She has five grown children, fourteen grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. She is enjoying performing in two concert bands in Florida on the French horn. She is an avid swimmer, bicyclist, tennis player, and a fan of the performing arts.

Thomas Letten Ellis, formally of New Bern, passed away September 4, 2018 from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Born in Chicago, Illinois January 23, 1946, his family moved to Etowah, Tennessee in 1953 and then to Maryville, Tennessee in 1959. Tom was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and later attended the University of Tennessee, majoring in accounting. After passing the CPA exam, he had a forty year career in public and private accounting, a profession that he dearly loved. Tom is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marialice Ellis; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Ali Ellis son and daughter-in-law Andy and Holly Ellis; six grandchildren: Allen, Jacob, Anna Claire, Sophie, Emma Caroline and Jackson Ellis; brother and sister-in-law Drs. Steve and Carol Ellis. Tom was a member of the ACBL, earning his Life Master in bridge in 2008 and a Silver Life Master in 2015. He truly enjoyed the competition at the bridge table and all of the partners he played with for twelve years, both at the Deane Hill Bridge Center and the Everett Senior Center. Upon returning to Maryville in July of 1987, Tom became involved in the Maryville Little League with his two sons, assisting with coaching and the financial end. He was a master in keeping the score books and even kept the score books at the Smoky Mountain Softball Classic for many years. Tom was a regular hiking partner with the late Margaret Stephenson, hiking all of the trails in the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains. He kept a detailed journal of the hikes and the folks he hiked with. Sondra Wagner Ellis died on February 10, 2022, at her home in St. Louis MO, after losing a struggle with cancer. She was born on January 5, 1938, in Cumberland, Maryland, to Earl Wagner, Sr. and Elizabeth S. Wagner. Sondra graduated in 1960 from Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee, where she met her future husband of fifty-nine years, Dorsey D. (Dan) Ellis, Jr. She earned a Masters Degree in biology from Vassar College in 1962. Sondra and Dan then married and moved to New York City. After several years researching Tay-Sachs Disease at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in Brooklyn, she became a fulltime homemaker. When she and Dan moved to Iowa City in 1968, Sondra became an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, worked to preserve Lincoln Elementary School from closure, and served on the advisory committee to the Director of Hancher Auditorium. It was in Iowa City that she found her true passion, gardening. She was a leader in Project Green and earned a Master Gardner certificate. After moving to St. Louis in 1987, Sondra joined The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, where she has served as a member of the Parish Guild, the Vestry, and the Robert Fund Board. She also served as the Parish Treasurer twice. Her love of gardening led to her active participation in U City in Bloom, the St. Louis Herb Society (where she led the establishment of the Legacy Fund), and the Missouri Botanical Garden.

She is survived by her husband, Dan; her daughter Laura Ellis; her son and daughter-in-law Geoff and Wendy Ellis; her grandchildren, Kenzie and Tate Ellis, and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ellis.

Rev. Ronald D. Elley, 74 of Lafayette went home to the be his Lord at 9:40 am on Monday June 27th. He was born December 26, 1941 in Montgomery, Alabama, the adopted son of Robert D. and Dorothea Spear Elly. He was an ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA), serving in the Wabash Valley Presbytery. He married Ellen Saint on June 11, 1966 in Elwood, IN and moved to Lafayette in 1967. Ron was a man of vision who inspired others to needed social action. He was the founding director of Lafayette Urban Ministry and L.A.S.S.O.; he helped develop Home with Hope, the Crisis Center, and the Riggs Community Health Center, and he served on boards at Habitat for Humanity and Beacon Academy. He served on four mission trips to Mexico and was a lender in the Lafayette Great Banquet. Ron searched for and reunited with his birth mother, June Berry. He cherished his family, and he enjoyed reading, running, and playing basketball. Ron was known for his puns and tie-dye shirts. He is survived by his wife Ellen; three daughters: Beth Baumgartner of Cincinnati, OH; Julianne (Michael) Shannon of Indianapolis; and Laura (Keith) Hudson of La Grande, OR; Six grandchildren: Peter and Marie Baumgartner of Cincinnati; Lean and Stella Shannon of Indianapolis; and Lucas and Benjamin Hudson of La Grande, OR. a twin brother Donald (Anne) Elly of Des Moines, IA also survives. Also surviving are his sisters in law: Jean Dorris, Dorthea (Lloyd) Hanton, Hazel Collins, and Kathleen (T.C.) Curlee.

My husband Ron Elly died from Multiple Myeloma in June of 2016. I moved to a 4 room rental house in an apartment complex in Lafayette in November of 2018, then spent the next seven months finishing clearing out my home of 47 years, making needed repairs and painting it, finally selling it in June of 2019. Now I’m finally settled in my new home. I’m now the medical rep for my older sister, whom we are working on moving to an assisted living facility. Whew! And I thought retirement meant “enjoying my golden years!” I’m also trying to find time to write about my memories of growing up etc. I’m on church session. Still singing in the church choir ( not during Covid), and lead the Neighboring Team of my church, which reaches out to serve and assist the church’s neighborhood and community. My 3 daughters are all in service professions….teacher. social worker and pastor. Have 6 grandchildren: 3 boys and 3 girls. I continue to enjoy special time with each daughter and her family as often as I can.

Recently deployed onboard the USS Essex (LHD-2), flying the MH-60S Seahawk. Currently assigned to NAS Whiting Field in Milton, FL as an instructor pilot.

Betty Jo Woody Russell Endsley passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2019. Betty was born on Aug 6, 1933 in Del Rio, TN to Ernest and Bertie Murr Woody. She graduated from Cocke County High School in 1950, receive a B.S Degree from Maryville College in 1954, an M.S Degree in Elementary Education in 1972 plus 45 hours in post graduate studies from UT Knoxville. She taught first grade at Springbrook Elementary school (Alcoa Elementary) for 30 years. A Major interest was travel. She and her family traveled with Lacy's family out West, on cruises and to Mexico and Hawaii. She and Jewel traveled the lower 48 states as well as Alaska, Canada and Nova Scotia in their motorhome. They made several trips to Florida and the outer banks, NC They enjoyed cruising in the Caribbean Islands and Panama Canal. Preceded in death by Parents-Ernest and Bertie Woody, former husband Roy N Russell, Son-Robert (Bobby) N Russell, brother and sister-in Law-Lacy and Esta Woody, brother-in-law, Curtis Lowe, and Step-Son-Greg Endsley. Survivors: Husband-Jewel L. Endsley, Daughter-Beth Russell Lee, Sister-Barbara Lowe, step Children-Ned Endsley, Brian Endsley, Janelle(Eric) Basler, Eric(LeAnn) Endsley, Scott Endsley and Deidre(DeeDee) Perry. Ella Louise Swift Enfield, age 83 years of Street, MD, entered the Kingdom of our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Born in Madonna, MD on May 28, 1931, she was a loving daughter of the late Charles L. and Nora (Poe) Swift. Married at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Madonna, she was the wife of Richard Heaps Enfield, Sr. for 59 years. She is also survived by: Two children-both of Whiteford, MD. A son, Richard Heaps Enfield, Jr. and his wife, Joy Enfield A daughter, Cynthia Enfield Poteet and her husband, Scott Poteet. Her grandchildren- Alex Poteet of Virginia Beach, VA Amy Poteet of Whiteford, MD Jodi Enfield of Whiteford, MD Her siblings- Pauline Swift Brannan of Bel Air, MD Charles L. (Mike) Swift, Jr. and his wife, Edie of Port Charlotte, FL Reba Swift Lytle of Elkton, MD Wm. Thomas Swift and his wife, MaryLee of Jarrettsville, MD Ella grew up in Jarrettsville and graduated from the former Jarrettsville High School in 1948. She received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Maryville College in Tennessee in 1952. She taught kindergarten and first grade in both Baltimore and Harford Counties for 15 years. She was a member of the D.A.R. since 1972 as well as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Tau Chapter. Ella was a longtime member of Highland Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, was ordained as Ruling Elder in 1974 and in 1969 as a Deacon. She and her husband founded Enfield Equipment in Whiteford, MD where she worked alongside her husband in the business community. She believed in “service to others” and promoting overall health which later led her to the opening and promoting of the former Whiteford Family Health Center, a Curves franchise and a Christian Childcare Center supported by the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church of Whiteford. Ella was involved in dairy and crop farming for 40 years, promoting all aspects of agriculture. She was a 25 year member of the Highland Community Association and was instrumental in the formation of the Highland Commons Building. Visitation was held on October 10, 2014. at Highland Presbyterian Church where the funeral service and interment followed in the adjoining church cemetery. Dr. Marshall C. England, Jr., passed away on September 21, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diana, who was his college sweetheart and best friend for 54 years; his infant son, “Tiger”; his brother, Bill England; and his parents, Marshall Sr. and Lura. Marshall graduated from Maryville College in 1954, the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1958 and the Medical College of Virginia Graduate Studies in 1967. He was certified by The American Board of Endodontics in 1981. Marshall was Program Director at Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He was an avid fly fisherman and he loved his trips to Canada. He also had a love for antique cars, of which he had several over the years. Upon retirement, Marshall returned to his hometown of Maryville, Tennessee. Marshall was uncle, cousin and friend to many wonderful people who will miss him dearly.
