Class of 1953
All Notes Memoriam

passed away on January 2, 2015 from complications of dementia. Jeanne was born in East Orange New Jersey on October 9th, 1931 to James and Dorothy (Flanders) Ellis. She was raised in the family home at 662 River Road in Chatham Township, N.J., and graduated from Chatham High School in 1949. Jeanne earned her way through Maryville College, Maryville Tennessee by working summers as a waitress at the Hotel Suburban in Summit, N.J. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Maryville College in 1953. Jeanne met Tasker K. Robinette in college and they were married in New Providence, N.J, on August 24, 1952, before returning to college to complete their senior year. After college the Robinettes moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Jeanne worked for the Nooter Corporation as a secretary and Tasker attended graduate school at Washington University. They then moved to Tinton Falls, N.J. where Jeanne worked for Bendix Aviation while Tasker did his internship at Monmouth Memorial Hospital in Long Branch, N.J. In the summer of 1955, the Robinettes moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where newly commissioned 2nd Lt. Tasker attended the U.S.A.F. School of Aviation Medicine. Daughter Karen was born there, on November 29th, 1955. Son Kenneth was born April 30, 1957 in Spokane, Washington where husband Tasker was then serving as an administrator of the Air Force Hospital at Fairchild Air Force Base. After his obligatory military service the Robinette’s moved to Park Forest, Illinois. Jeanne’s daughter Barbara was born in Park Forest on September 11, 1960. From 1955 until the family first moved to Anacortes, Washington (in 1961) Jeanne was fully occupied as a wife and mother. In 1962, however, she also began to take on additional challenges. She was a founding member of the Skagit-Island County Unitarian Fellowship, the Anacortes Arts & Crafts festival (active from 1961 through 1967) and Anacortes Community Theatre. In 1964, she played the role of Sheila in an ACT performance of “THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE” and worked on costumes and props in other productions. When the Robinettes moved to Edmonds, Washington in 1967, Jeanne became an active leader in the Edmonds Unitarian Church. In 1970, she earned a second Bachelors Degree (in Anthropology) from the University of Washington. After the Robinettes moved on to Lake Oswego, Oregon, she earned a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Portland State University which she applied in many ways. She wrote and, in 1984, published a book on the promise of citizen action: “Cheaper Gov’t Can Still Get The Job Done.” During her 19 years in Lake Oswego she served her community in every way she could. She chaired a city-wide land use inventory, and served on the Board of the League of Woman Voters. She also served as a Lake Oswego Planning Commissioner, as a member of the Portland Area Boundary Commission, and as a consultant for the Oregon State Department of Economic Development. Jeanne founded and managed the activist organization Oregonians for Cost Effective Government, which evolved into Cascade Policy Institute. She also designed, planned and conducted the first two national conferences on government service privatization. Jeanne and Tasker returned to Anacortes, Washington, in 1989, where she spent the first three years after their return helping her husband build their new home on 17th Street and working part time as a land use planning consultant. In 1992 she was elected to the Anacortes City Council and served as a Council member until her second term expired in 2001. In 2002 she joined the noon Kiwanis Club and was an active member until poor health caused her resignation in 2013. Jeanne was also a long time member and Treasurer of the Anacortes Museum Foundation, the West Skagit County Republican Women’s Club, the Skagit County Marine Resources Committee, the Anacortes Library Foundation, the Sea Island Chorus and the Anacortes Harmonaires women’s barber shop singing group. She was honored by Soroptimist International of Anacortes in 2002 as an Anacortes “Woman of Distinction” and in 2012 as Grand Marshall of the 4th of July parade. In later years she stood every Sunday, on the corner of 12th and Commercial Ave. with a group of proud Americans waving her flag and looking east to honor her beloved country. Jeanne leaves behind her beloved husband of 63 years and her three children; Karen, of Wasilla, Alaska, Kenneth, of Bellingham, Washington, and Barbara, of Rochester, N.Y. She is also survived by her younger sister Marjorie Conlan of Chatham, New Jersey and her four grandchildren, Leigh James and Joy Elizabeth Robinette, and Ryan Oliver and Heather Morgan O’Donnell.

He was a man who felt the love of God in his heart and passed it on freely and unconditionally. A U.S. Air Force Veteran and graduate of Maryville College and Union Theological Seminary in New York, he served as Minister of Music at First Baptist Church in Kingsport, Tenn., for 29 years; there he touched many lives through a music ministry of multiple choirs spanning pre-school through senior adults, handbells, string ensembles, and an orchestra. Before moving to Kingsport, he served at First Baptist Church of Clarksville, Tenn., and Smithwood Baptist Church in Knoxville. In his retirement, he loved tending his garden and enjoyed volunteer work, which included giving free violin, viola and cello lessons. He and his wife were active in the Alumni Association of Maryville College and were very generous in their support of the college’s educational mission. He was proud to have played viola in the Maryville Alcoa Community College Orchestra for many years under the baton of his oldest son, Bill. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred C. Robinson and their children, Bill Robinson, Jr. (Martha), Ann Robinson-Craig (Chris Craig), Bob Robinson (Martha), Susan Hoover (Roger), Mary Dodson (Brian), and Tom “TR” Robinson (Cindy); and their Ugandan son they adopted later in life, Yebalibinga “Freddie” Robinson (Susan). They raised, nurtured, educated and created a genuine caring family life for Joan and Rick, complete with amusement, laughter and occasional discipline. When the family moved to NC in the early 1960’s, Phyllis enrolled in graduate school at UNC-Greensboro and accomplished a Masters Degree in Child Development as well as numerous credits toward her Ph.D. Some of Phyllis’ fondest memories include transporting her grandsons to school, from preschool through middle school. She was always ready to assist with delivering them to designated baseball fields, tennis courts, golf courses and guitar lessons. Ethel Marie Rosenfeld passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 at the home of her son, Peter Rosenfeld and his wife, Ann Babb, who cared for Ethel during the past few years with great love and thoughtfulness. Her granddaughter, Leah and Martha, her caretaker, were by her bedside when she passed away in the early morning. Born in Trenton, N.J., Ethel’s father, George Washington Hanners, was a Methodist minister, and religion was a great comfort to Ethel throughout her life. Although she was comfortable with all denominations, Ethel later converted to the Episcopal Church, and enjoyed the ceremony and theology associated with it. Born with a great zest for living, Ethel participated in field hockey, equestrian competitions, basketball and any activity that allowed her to be active and outdoors. Ethel attended Maryville College and Johns Hopkins University, and proved to be an independent thinker early in life. Although Ethel’s initial educational goal was to attend medical school, she changed her academic pursuit to Nursing School while her first husband, George O. Beall, served in WWII as a Navy Pilot. As highest ranking officer, George was first to fly over a small island in Japan. His plane was destroyed by Japanese gunfire, and he was found and buried by the island natives, who graced his grave with flowers. Ethel continued her studies at Johns Hopkins University as a young widow and graduated in 1948. It was during her tenure at Johns Hopkins that Ethel met fellow student, Jerome Rosenfeld, who was pursuing his doctorate in Bacteriology. Post their marriage, they had five children and eventually settled down in Little Rock, Ark., where Jerome (Jerry) served on the staff at the University of Arkansas Medical Center. Ethel went on the raise her five children, while completing a Master’s Degree at Arkansas State College of Nursing in 1971, receiving the Faculty Award for Academic Excellence. She continued her passion for psychiatric nursing as a Clinical Practitioner and Clinical Instructor of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, in addition to serving as an Assoc. Professor in Nursing at the University of Central Arkansas Graduate Program. During her career, Ethel was Co-Chair of the Joint Practice Committee of Arkansas Medical Society and Arkansas State Nurses Association, was in Who’s Who of American Nursing and produced a plethora of articles and presentations. Ethel will be remembered by the many people she supported and helped with kindness and patience, both in her psychiatric nursing practice and with family and friends. She was an intelligent, fearless, progressive, and kind person, who also had a ‘sense of humor,’ which attracted others. Ethel was the epitome of the mother and grandmother every child and grandchild would wish to have. Jerome Rosenfeld predeceased Ethel as did her daughter, Rachel Ann Rosenfeld of Chapel Hill, N.C. Her other living children are Deborah Kohls and spouse, Jamie Kohls of Chapel Hill, N.C., Diana Rosenfeld and spouse, Dr. Jim Pang of Cordova, Tenn., Peter Rosenfeld and spouse, Ann Babb of Collingswood, N.J., and George Rosenfeld of Collingswood, N.J.; Ethel is grandmother to Rachel ‘Shay’ Crow of Denver, Colo. (husband Mike Crow), Nathan Pang of Bartlett, Tenn. (wife Jennifer Fossett Pang), Leah Babb Rosenfeld of Manhattan, N.Y., Jessica Kohls of Raleigh, N.C., Josh Pang of Memphis, Tenn. and Reid Kohls of Carrboro, N.C.; and great-grandmother to Vivian Rose Crow, Jerome Fossett Pang and Vaughn George Crow. The family is forever appreciative of the love provided by caretakers Tenoa, Martha and Carla.
