Professor Emerita, Director Global+ Program

I am a Professor Emerita of Psychology at Maryville College, as well as former Coordinator for the Neuroscience major. Currently, I am the Director of the Global+ Program in the Center for Global Engagement. While a professor, I was highly involved with international education here at MC, periodically co-leading travel-study programs to the United Kingdom & Ireland, Switzerland, and South Africa.

Research:

My early research focused on how physiology interacts with personality characteristics in affecting health outcomes, particularly coronary heart disease.  Another area of interest over the years involved studying psychoactive drug action. I have since shifted to historical research in the areas of psychopharmacology (drugs and behavior) and neuroscience and have given numerous presentations on my work at professional conferences. That research culminated in a 2019 publication, The Advance of Neuroscience.

Background:

I am a native Tennessean (Memphis area) and received both of my degrees from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville.  My doctorate is in areas of psychology known as psychophysiology and health psychology (there was no distinct field of neuroscience back then!).  My post-doctoral research was in psychopharmacology and for several summers afterwards, I was an Honorary Research Fellow at University College London in the U.K.  I joined the Maryville College Faculty in 1989.
