MC3Band to present Veterans Day concert
Oct. 28, 2021

The MC3Band, under the direction of Dr. Eric Simpson, will present a Veterans Day concert titled “Different Ships.”
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 11 in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre.
The event is free and open to the public, although a printed ticket is required for admission. Tickets are limited and available on a first come, first-served basis. For tickets, please contact the Clayton Center Box Office at 865-981-8590 or visit claytonartscenter.com. Please note that masks are required in all indoor campus spaces.
The patriotic program is intended to serve as “a celebration of America and our veterans,” Simpson said. The phrase “Different Ships” comes from a quote by Rep. John Lewis that he attributed to Martin Luther King: “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”
The program will include: “An American Fanfare” by Rick Kirby; “Hymn of the Overcomer” by Lawren Brianna Ware; “Embraceable You” by George Gershwin (Arr. Barker); “Virgin Island March” by Alton Adams; “Hymn to the Fallen” by John Williams (Arr. Lavender); “Duke Ellington in Concert” by Duke Ellington (Arr. Murtha); “My Shot” from Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Arr. Brown); and “Washington Post March” by John Philip Sousa (Arr. Brion/Schissel).
Special guests will include Dr. Alicia Massie-Legg, senior lecturer in music at Maryville College, who will sing “Embraceable You” with the ensemble.
“Veterans Day is one of our most important holidays, and this program acknowledges and recognizes the diverse group of men and women that serve and continue to serve in the defense of our country,” Simpson said. “The music we will perform has something for everyone, from the very contemporary (Hamilton) to the classically American (Gershwin.) We’re proud of all of our veterans, proud to play music to honor them, and happy to be performing again at Maryville College.”
The MC3Band serves a dual purpose: to provide a means of artistic expression for all of its members (community and student) within the wind band medium, and to provide MC students with the opportunity to perform and learn within a large ensemble setting. Band members include working musicians, educators, college students, business professionals and retirees from throughout East Tennessee. Using a symphonic band instrumentation, the band performs repertoire from the entire scope of the wind band tradition.
