Claire Pinkston of Loudon, Tenn., has received Maryville College’s full-tuition music scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year.
Pinkston, a senior at Loudon High School, will be a first-year student at Maryville College in fall 2021 and plans to major in music education.
Maryville College’s Division of Fine Arts offers scholarship opportunities for those who demonstrate both talent and potential in their field. The music scholarship, which covers up to full tuition and is open to music majors, is awarded based on the student’s record of experience and success in their field, the potential for the applicant to contribute to the quality of the music department, letter(s) of recommendation, and the quality of the audition performance.
“We are just delighted to have Claire Pinkston as part of our community of music majors at Maryville College,” said Stacey Wilner, director of choral activities at Maryville College. “Her lovely voice and musicianship will contribute greatly to the Maryville College Concert Choir, where she will serve as a musical ambassador for the college, touring both domestically and internationally each spring semester.”
Wilner said that as an incoming first-year student, Pinkston also will have the opportunity to perform in student recitals and audition for available positions in the College’s small vocal ensembles, Off Kilter, Lads and Lassies.
“Each fall semester, the students in the Concert Choir host All-East Chorus and the MC Invitational Choir Festival, which are both held in one of the finest acoustical spaces in the South, the Clayton Center for the Arts,” Wilner continued. “Claire will also have the opportunity to work with artists-in-residence such as tenor Paul Phoenix, formerly of the King’s Singers and composer/tenor Paul Rudoi, who has performed with professional vocal ensembles such as Cantus and Seraphic Fire. It will be a treat to introduce her to visiting Maryville College alumni who are professional musicians, such as soprano April Martin ’08 and tenor John Wesley Wright ’87, at our annual Homecoming Choir Concert and in master classes throughout the year. We are looking forward to the 2021-22 concert season and are excited to have Claire join us!”
Fine Arts scholarship recipients are required to participate in a related music ensemble, and the scholarship is renewable for eight fall/spring semesters of full-time study.
Interested applicants must complete an application and campus interview/audition, and scholarship applications are due in February.
