A viral chauffeur and more: A look back at the top Maryville College videos of 2024

Dec. 18, 2024

Let’s face it: Academia is serious business, but when we lean into our light-hearted, silly goofy sides from time to time, it’s always a hit. And in some cases, a massive hit: The most-watched Maryville College video, by far, debuted in August, when MC President Dr. Bryan Coker borrowed a golf cart from the Office of Admissions and chauffeured students to and from the first day of class. It was, in fact, something of a viral sensation on TikTok, where it’s been viewed more than 72,000 times and garnered 235 comments. As one commenter said, “This is the way to form a community and a second family for these students. Well done, sir.” We couldn’t agree more, because it captures the very thing that makes Maryville College special: the intimate relationships between students and faculty and staff; the smaller size, so that a ride across campus takes less than 5 minutes; and a president who sets the tone because he enjoys what he does so much. While no other MC video came close, however, the ones that proved the most popular continued to spotlight why Maryville College is in a league of its own when it comes to making memories and learning how to “do good on the largest possible scale.”

Maryville College is a nationally-ranked institution of higher learning and one of America’s oldest colleges. For more than 200 years we’ve educated students to be giving citizens and gifted leaders, to study everything, so that they are prepared for anything — to address any problem, engage with any audience and launch successful careers right away. Located in Maryville, Tennessee, between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the city of Knoxville, Maryville College offers nearly 1,200  students from around the world both the beauty of a rural setting and the advantages of an urban center, as well as more than 60 majors, seven pre-professional programs and career preparation from their first day on campus to their last. Today, our 10,000 alumni are living life strong of mind and brave of heart and are prepared, in the words of our Presbyterian founder, to “do good on the largest possible scale.”
