The Minor in Humanities invites students to consolidate their academic and professional skills while stretching them beyond the borders of training for a particular major or career. It helps students avoid narrow specialization and address fundamental questions about what it means to be human. Students pursuing this minor select from a range of courses in History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Successful completion of the Humanities minor enhances career opportunities and helps students explore their life’s meaning and purpose.

  • To expand students’ understanding of the human condition in its historical, philosophical, and/or religious dimensions
  • To enhance academic skills in reading, analysis, and communication
  • To broaden student focus beyond their major areas of study

The Minor in Humanities requires the completion of 18 credit hours in history, philosophy, and/or religion––with at least 9 credit hours at or above the 200-level, and with at least 15 credit hours in disciplines outside the student’s major(s) and any other minor(s).

In addition to required courses for majors and minors, Maryville College students take classes in the Maryville Curriculum, a core program of general education. Consisting of 51 credit hours, the Maryville Curriculum ensures that students see their major in a wider context and develop the basic communication, quantitative, and critical thinking skills that are needed for success in college and career.
