KT Global 2022

KT Global 2022

On Saturday, April 9, 2022, more than 300 Maryville College alumni and friends from across the country – and globe – participated in MC’s second annual KT Global event, which was created to unite MC alumni worldwide to give their time and talent back to their own communities.

“KT Global 2022 built upon the success of our inaugural event in 2021. Many volunteers participated again, while we also added new projects, volunteers, and organizations served,” said Jennifer Triplett, director of alumni affairs. “The success of our second year confirms the KT Global model – whereby the alumni project leaders were largely in charge of recruiting and organizing volunteers for projects and/or organizations they felt passionate about serving – garners great local engagement.” Triplett added that the KT Global Task Force plans to continue scaling the event in 2023.

The 316 volunteers included MC alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students. There were 34 projects in three countries, 12 states, and 23 towns/cities across the globe, and volunteers served 1,000 hours collectively. The event included a range of projects to serve communities, including litter clean-up, gardening, support for non-profit agencies, and assistance with the Maryville College Archives. While many volunteers who participated in last year’s event returned to participate this year, there were also new faces for the 2022 event, including former MC president Dr. Wayne Anderson, who assisted with a forest restoration project at Legacy Park in Atlanta.

This year, a new type of project focused on fundraising, Scots Support Ukraine, was launched in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Through a contact, MCAA president Marcia Rethwilm Kilby ’89 learned of 101 Ukrainian high school students at a boarding school in Slovakia that needed support, as they were far from their families and homes. MC alumni and friends rallied to raise more than $5,500 throughout the month of April to provide a full weeks’ food and lodging for these students. This project demonstrates the various ways MC alumni and the community can be of service through KT Global.

KT Global is inspired by KT Week (later called KT Days), which was started 25 years ago by Dan Greaser ’60 and a group of alumni as an annual event on campus. Every year, about 100 MC alumni from across the country travel to Maryville to donate to the College something other than money – their time. They stay in the residence halls, eat in the dining hall, and sign up for manual labor projects like pressure washing, painting, carpentry, masonry and landscaping. The pandemic canceled the on-campus event for 2020 and 2021, but the Maryville College Alumni Office wanted to find a way to enhance and build upon this on-campus event that would provide opportunities for alumni engagement worldwide.

Named for Kin Takahashi, a student from Maryville College’s past, KT Days and KT Global celebrate the “can-do” spirit of a student who, during the 1890s, founded the College’s first football team and led a project to build Bartlett Hall on campus.

In addition to uniting MC alumni worldwide on one specific weekend, KT Global created many benefits, including:

  • Expanding MC branding and name recognition around the nation;
  • Increasing overall alumni engagement with the College;
  • Connecting with alumni who live far from campus and find it difficult to participate in College events;
  • Connecting with young alumni;
  • Connecting with alumni who have been inactive since graduating;
  • Engaging 72 years of students and alumni, from class years 1952-2024;
  • Forming new alumni coalitions, groups, friendships and chapters; and
  • Fostering MC alumni relationships with local community organizations.

KT Global was initially launched by the Maryville College Alumni Association (MCAA) during Homecoming in October 2020 (watch the virtual launch event). KT Global 2022 was launched early in the year with a new exciting video highlighting the great work done during the inaugural year – watch here. The planning was led by MC alumna Stephani Richardson McCarty ’10 and Jennifer Phillips Triplett ’07, director of alumni affairs. Special thanks to Stephani and Jennifer, as well as MCAA president Marcia Kilby Rethwilm ’89 and the MCAA Task Force members; project leaders; Jacob Burns ’10, who produced the KT Global videos; and Angie Harris, the former director of alumni affairs. Stephani McCarty also created the KT Global logo, which is featured on a t-shirt sent to all volunteers as a thank you gift for their participation.

“KT Global has confirmed what we already know about the MC family’s commitment to a lifelong legacy of service, but it has also created a new way for alumni to connect and engage that I’ve really enjoyed being a part of and helping to grow these past two years. I’m excited to see where we go from here!” McCarty said.

Maryville College students participated in KT Global during KT WeekEND 2022, also held April 9. Students completed several projects aimed at making a positive environmental impact on the Maryville College campus – particularly the Maryville College Woods. The event is sponsored by MC’s Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, the MC Physical Plant, and the Maryville College Woods Group. Special thanks to Amy Gilliland, director of community engagement at MC, Dr. Drew Crain, MC professor of biology and chair of the Maryville College Woods group, and Reggie Dailey, former director of the Physical Plant, for their work on planning this event.

There are plans for a KT Global volunteer reunion during Homecoming on Saturday, October 22, and plans for KT Global 2023 are in the works! Stay tuned for details!
