Libby’s husband, Jack, passed away Feb. 20th after an lung cancer battle lasting almost 8 years. According to the family, “there were so many good recoveries and only recently did the illness return. He is safely in Heaven. He continued as a professional pianist until just recently, sharing music, mirth, and love with family, friends,and colleagues.”

Writes in to say that he was diagnosed with ALL leukemia January, 2015, spent three months in hospital and rehab, and achieved full remission in October. Our 61st wedding anniversary was June, 2015. And, Yes! they still are involved in marriage and family counseling and support. Spent three years as part-time “Pastor to the Pastors” for a UMC District, and six years in English worship and education with two Korean congregations, one Presbyterian and one Methodist. Still preaching and teaching. JoAnne volunteers at All Childrens Hospital, and as Deacon at FPC of St. Pete. Still ballroom dancing and woodworking.

graduated from Maryville College and has worked as an interpreter in schools, colleges, business offices, hospitals, correctional facilities, political meetings and more. Amber attended graduate school at Xavier University in 2011 in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling where she interned as a case manager for Deaf families and at a high school in Puerto Rico. Since 2013 she has been on the management team at Sorenson Communications, the leader in video relay technology for the Deaf, as the Director in Atlanta and the Asst. Director in Cincinnati. Amber is an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Cincinnati, and has had the privilege of sitting on the Maryville College National Alumni Board for two terms. CRC Press has released a book titled “Managing Environmental Data:  Principles, Techniques, and Best Practices” written by MC Alum Gerald Burnette.  The book provides expert guidance on proper methods for managing environmental data, as well as detailed information about database management systems, proper database design and implementation, and creation of custom environmental data management applications.  CRC Press will be encouraging academic Environmental Science programs around the world to use this text as source material for advanced classes.

Cole has been accepted into the College Student Personnel Master’s program at the University of Tennessee. He will start Fall 2016. This program is a two-year, practitioner-oriented master’s degree designed to prepare student personnel administrators to address the administrative needs of colleges and universities.

Cole completed his master’s degree in College Student Personnel at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in May and shortly thereafter he began his position as the Director of Student Career Management in the Supply Chain Department at UTK.

Allie Horvath Burns ’15 accepted a position as career coach for students with disabilities at Pellissippi State Community College.

Heather Hendricks Byrd

Prospect Elementary teacher Heather Byrd ’02 will become the assistant principal at Eagleton Elementary School. She succeeds Chad Tipton, who was named principal at Rockford Elementary last month. A graduate of Heritage High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryville College, and master’s and education specialist’s degrees from Tennessee Technological University. Byrd currently is working on her doctorate. She just completed her 15th year in education, nine as an elementary school teacher. Byrd taught for eight years in Murray County, Ga., and the past school year was a second-grade teacher at Prospect Elementary. In between, she was an elementary instructional coach for five years and an English language arts coordinator in Bradley County before she and her husband decided to move back home to Blount County.

Writes in to share that in addition to her Master of Clinical Social Work and LCSW, she has recently obtained her Master of Chinese Acupuncture (11/2020) and most recently obtained her Diplomat Status (NCCAOM Dipl. Ac, and License (L.AC.) in TN to practice acupuncture. She opened a practice and will see patients in the Germantown area of Nashville.

Rev. Dr. Carlisle continues as President of mannapublications.org. Manna offers free downloads of easy to read Bible commentaries and children’s Christian coloring books in many languages. Chris continues his interim ministry at Lake Waccamaw, NC and he and Linda will soon have their eleventh grandchild. They plan on a 50th wedding anniversary celebration the week of July 9, 2016.

writes in to say that she lost her husband April 30th, 2016 after a 15 year battle with Parkinson's and dementia. Her husband was John Stiles who worked for 33 years at the Knoxville News Sentinel. He covered a lot Blount County stories, many involving Maryville College, especially the Mtn. Challenge Program. Catherine is looking forward to going on with her life now that her care giving duties are over. She plans to do some traveling, volunteer work, and will still make stained glass and pottery items to sell online on her Etsy site.

has accepted the position of First Assistant to the Pro at the prestigious Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, VA. He played golf at Walters State Community College before transferring to Maryville College where he helped his team to a GSAC Conference Championship his senior year. At Maryville, Cason earned a degree in Business and Organizational Management, developing an interest in pursuing golf as a career.

Has gotten a position as an English Language Arts and Reading Teacher at the Esperanza Academy in Lawrence, MA. It is a private, Episcopal, all-girls middle school in which all of the students are from disadvantaged, low income homes, but have a passion for learning and education. The school provides a rigorous curriculum and a vast array of extra curricular activities to prepare students for admission into some of New England’s top boarding schools. MarQuis will be teaching several sections of English Language Arts in addition to serving as an academic advisor and supervising extra curricular theater and music programs.

Chesnutt named Atlanta VAHCS Nurse Practitioner of the Year, 2021

Margaret Chesnutt has made significant contributions to our nurse practitioners within the Atlanta VA Health Care System. Chesnutt, an invaluable member of our primary care team, serves our Veterans and spearheads new nurse practitioners’ orientation where she meets with newly hired NPs on a monthly basis and reviews information to acclimate them to our electronic medical record and VA processes. She also has served in many leadership roles in the national Otolaryngology Nurses Association, as President and as Conference Chair organizing their annual educational symposium and promotes professional collaboration among their membership. Last year, she spearheaded the Atlanta APRN Council 1st CE Day during Nurse Practitioner Week. More than 125 nurses participated and earned continuous educational credit.
She is honored to be voted NP of the Year by her colleagues.

MC alumna and Alcoa native, Dr. Shirley Carr Clowney '58, digs deep into the story of African-Americans in Blount County. Clowney's book, "Our Place in Time: Blacks in Blount County," is a 133-page paperback book focuses on the contributions of blacks in areas like education, religion, government, sports, armed forces and arts to name a few.
