Class of 2006
Robert “Bobby” Floyd ’06 has been offered the position of Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program Manager for the Department of the Army Management Office (DAMO) at the Pentagon. He will head the program that repairs and conditions maneuver land before and after military training events. The position entails environmental policy work pertaining to subjects like prescribed fire implementation, NEPA, endangered species compliance, wetlands, etc. He says, “That liberal arts education is paying off!”
Class of 1949
On Nov. 16, 2021 during halftime of the Maryville College-Greensboro football game, the Volunteer State Honor Guard, led by Sgt. Keith Kregel USMC, performed a flag folding ceremony. The recipient of the folded flag was WWII veteran and alumnus Bill Fogarty ’48, who was a paratrooper and member of the 11th Airborne Division. After he returned from war and enrolled at the College, he was the quarterback and tailback for the football team.
Class of 1951
is thrilled to announce that she and her husband plan to move to live in Maryville on June 1st. After 40 years in South Korea, retired near DC, a Delaware beach and a CCRC in Lewes DE they are coming a wiggly full circle back to Maryville! Their six kids live in the UAE, China, Rwanda, Alaska, Alabama, Tennessee and some grandchildren also live in the South.
Class of 2000
Holds the Masters of Arts in Interpretation from Gallaudet University and is continuing work on her dissertation in the Gallaudet PhD program with concentrations in interpreting pedagogy and research. This is the first and only PhD program in the field of signed languages interpreting. She continues to work full time with Gallaudet Interpreting Services. Holds National Interpreter Certification (NIC) in interpreting from RID.org (Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf) in addition to other interpreting certifications. She was first certified nationally with RID (Certificate of Transliteration) as an MC senior.
Class of 1982
writes in to share that their second grandson Theo was born on December 16 with their first being born in May. As such, 2018 was a beautiful and eventful year for the Fortney family as well as for her parents with the addition of two great-grandchildren! Her father, David Helwig, graduated from MC in 1953, and her mother attended MC for three years (fall of 1952 through spring of 1955) before marrying my father and finishing her degree the following year at UTC, which was University of Chattanooga at the time. They met in Pearsons Dining Hall when her father was a senior and my mother was a freshman!
Class of 2010
was recently hired by RPM Transportation Consultants, LLC. He will perform road safety audits and draft recommendations for the firm’s transportation plans.

Kevin L. Fowler ’08 graduated from Lamar University in December with a doctorate in Global Education Leadership.

Class of 1967
is founder and artistic director of an outreach children’s theatre in Tuscaloosa, AL. Kristin also received the “Druid Arts Award” Theater Educator of the year 2013. She is the artist and director of the “Canterbury Gallery” and has been restoring a 200 year old home on Greek Island. Kristin is also a Adjunct Professor / Human Growth and Development at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

has earned her PhD in Cultural Studies of Education from the University of TN. She has done adjunct work for TN Tech University
Class of 1980
retired as an educator for the Texas Public Schools, after 32 years of service. My last assignment was with Huntington High School, where I served as the Asst. Principal for nine years. I worked as a teacher, coach, bus driver, as well as other duties as assigned. Now I will play golf, ref football, find a low stress part time job, volunteer at non-profits, and sing off key in the choir at church.

Following the death of her husband in 2009, she moved back to Washington where she is from originally and continued their business, The Patrice Press. She retired from teaching and book publishing, and has been the editor of The Lincoln Highway Forum, the magazine for the national Lincoln Highway Association, for the past 15 years.

has now retired and loving this new adventure.

In Jan 2022 accepted a job offer to be a Supply Systems Analyst for the VA’s Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISN) in Nashville, TN, covering the five VA Healthcare Systems (6 hospitals) in KY and TN after working at the VA Hospital at Mt. Home (Johnson City, TN) for 13 years.

Yasuo is currently working in an IT business department at a financial security company in Tokyo, Japan. He just finished setting up monitoring all of the company’s servers in real time. He says, “all I am doing is because of my Maryville College education. I want to thank all of the faculty and staff at MC.”
Class of 1963
Judge Mike Garrett was recently recognized twice for his contributions to the state of Missouri. He was first recognized with the 2016 Missourian Award. The Missourian Award is a prestigious award that acknowledges the most accomplished citizens of Missouri. To be selected, one must be born in the state of Missouri and must have made an outstanding contribution to the state or nation in one of the following fields: civics, business, arts or politics. Next he was recognized as one of the 50 Missourians You Should Know by Ingrams Magazine. This distinction recognizes Missouri citizens that “are driving this state forward with new ideas, new products and new services that will define the Missouri of tomorrow,” whose achievements set them apart. Class of 2009
completed legal interpreter training and passed the national written legal interpreting test in spring 2014. She is now NIC (National Interpreter Certification) Advanced certified. She continues to work as a contract interpreter in Minnesota in legal and medical settings, among others.
Class of 2000
VIEO Design’s Principal, founder, Lead Designer, and Lead Developer received another title in October 2014 when he was voted Knoxville’s Best Web Programmer for the 4th time. The Knoxville Big Wig Awards, from the American Advertising Federation of Knoxville, recognizes the people behind the best marketing and advertising in East Tennessee. The winners were announced at an awards gala on October 22, 2014.

On Feb. 17, Trent Gilland ’04 opened the Public House on High, 321 High St., in Maryville, a pub establishment hoping to bring back the lost nostalgia of a true pub to Maryville. Class of 1955
worked for newspapers in Arkansas and Tennessee from 1959-1980 and for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1980 -1999 and has since retired. He was married to Joan Frei Gilliand ’54 in 1955 until her death in 1997. He was married to Janet Whitmore Thompson ’56 in 1999 until her death in 2005. He is currently married to Dr. Lois M. Speaker ’55 since 2009.

wrote to say, “I spend summers at my little blue house at 127 Assembly Drive, Montreat, NC, a place where many of my family have been gathering for almost a century. I spent my childhood summers there with my grandmother. A brother and many cousins have summer homes there and one lives there year round.”

Founding partner of Gilreath & Associates (Knoxville, Memphis & Nashville), Sid Gilreath has spent his lifetime advocating for the rights of the voiceless.
