MC Cares

Maryville College is committed to the success, health, and well-being of all students. The MC Cares Team was developed to provide proactive, collaborative, holistic support to students and to protect the health and safety of the entire campus community. The MC Cares Team is not meant to take the place of faculty and staff conversations with students who are showing signs of difficulty. Rather, the Team is a supplement to the ongoing support offered by campus employees.

Is this an emergency?

  • If you are aware of a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
  • For an emergency that is not life-threatening, call MC Safety and Security at 865-981-8112
  • Any behavior that threatens the educational environment or jeopardizes the safety of the campus community should be reported to MC Safety and Security at 865-981-8112

Temporary Leave of Absence and Medical Withdrawal

Students navigating personal challenges that prevent them from attending class and/or completing assignments may request a Temporary Leave of Absence or full Medical Withdrawal from the semester. Please review the Academic Catalog regarding these policies and procedures.

Students wishing to request either a Temporary Leave of Absence or Medical Withdrawal may do so using the links below. Students should meet with the Dean of Students (mcdos@maryvillecollege.edu) or Student Outreach Coordinator (mccares@maryvillecollege.edu) prior to submission, when possible.

Academic Success

The Academic Success Center offers a variety of academic support services through tutoring, group study, and supplemental instruction. The Academic Success Center is located in the lower level of Thaw Hall. You can call them at 865-981-8121 or email ASC@maryvillecollege.edu

All students have an assigned faculty advisor (FYS instructor for first-years) who can help with questions about classes, majors, career paths, and more. Students may also reach out to an advising specialist in the newly formed Maryville Advising Program (MAP) which is located in the Academic Commons (main floor of Thaw Hall Library).

Physical Health

Emergency Medical Care

If you have an illness or injury that requires emergency care, Blount Memorial Hospital is located nearby. The hospital is directly across Highway 321 from the main entrance to the College. If you go to the emergency room, you will have to pay for the visit or file with your insurance.  Call 865-981-8112 (Security) or 865-981-8002 (Staff Member on Duty) for assistance while on-campus.

Non-Emergency Medical Care

River Valley Health (RVH) is Maryville College’s primary healthcare partner for students! Through this partnership, students can receive quick access to high-quality, comprehensive medical services. RVH’s Alcoa Health Center has same-day primary care appointments available for students. Whether students prefer to meet with a medical professional in-person or virtually*, RVH is prepared to help students optimize their health. RVH also has an on-site pharmacy that can provide students with medications. Services are available for everyone, regardless of health insurance status.
*First visit must be done in person.

Students may also seek care from other local providers in close proximity to the campus. They have not partnered with MC so standard insurance (or no insurance) rates would apply.

  • East TN Medical Group Care Today Clinic: 865-984-3864; 266 Joule St., Alcoa
  • Park Med Urgent Care: 865-982-3409; 117 Gill St., Alcoa

Mental/Emotional Health

The MC Counseling Center provides short-term counseling for students free of charge (8 per semester/16 per academic year) as well as several other services.

  • Workshops and presentations to educate students about mental health and substance use concerns.
  • Coordinate peer support groups on campus to help students with identified needs.
  • Provide referrals for those students who need more intensive care, have specialized needs, or could use psychiatric medications to help them.
  • Have drop-in sessions for more urgent needs and to help with more crisis situations that may need an immediate referral.

Uwill is a free mental health service provided by Maryville College for free virtual teletherapy for students. Students are able to choose their therapist based on preferences such as gender, language, ethnicity, or focus area. Uwill also provides a 24/7/364 helpline for those students who are experiencing a mental health crisis or some level of distress. Uwill is a great alternative for students who would prefer virtual therapy rather than coming to the Counseling Center on campus. They can also help with breaks and when students return home over the summer. Students will receive more information and instructions for how to sign up.
