Financial Literacy & Wellbeing at MC
Thanks to a grant received from the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) in the fall of 2022, financial literacy has been promoted extensively across campus and students have been given many opportunities to engage.
- Through the required Quantitative Literacy core course (MTH110)
- By taking an optional Personal Finance course (BUS344)
- Through selecting to minor in Accounting
- Through the financial literacy materials offered within many other courses
Angela Delozier, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, is spearheading the development of financial education efforts at Maryville College. Students enrolled in MTH110 Quantitative Literacy learn about budgeting and sound financial habits during several weeks of the semester.
Maryville College incorporates financial education into other subjects that do not directly relate to math or finance. The Maryville College Career Center, in its sections of the career development course entitled Maryville College Works 400, offers students the opportunity to complete modules on CashCourse as an optional assignment. Access to CashCourse for all students was made possible through NEFE.
Members of the MC faculty in the divisions of Math and Computer Science and Social Sciences are exploring different ways to strengthen students’ financial literacy. Additionally, faculty and staff are exploring additional pathways for the inclusion of financial education outside the areas of finance, business, and math.
