I owe a balance, what do I do now?

Don’t panic! You have several options.

  • Pay in full using Self-Service.
  • Set up a payment plan for the balance. Nelnet offers several plans that can fit any budget.
  • Parents can apply for the Parent PLUS Loan. This loan is in the parent or a stepparent’s name. Payments may begin once the student has graduated or withdrawn from school. If a parent is denied the Parent PLUS loan, the student will receive additional Unsubsidized Loans. Find more information on the StudentAid.gov site.
  • Look at an outside loan. FastChoice is a great place to start!
  • Any combination of the above options!

Example using multiple payment options
Student owes $10,000 for the year.
They pay $2,000 online using Self-Service.
A parent or guardian knows they can pay $400 per month. So they set up a payment plan for $4,000 or $400 per month for 10 months.
The remaining balance of $4,000 is paid using a Parent PLUS loan or an outside loan.
