Why Study Abroad?

At Maryville College, we believe studying abroad transforms your education and your life. Here are the top five reasons to take the leap:

  1. See the World and Yourself with New Eyes Immersing yourself in another culture isn’t just about visiting new places—it’s about gaining a fresh perspective on the world and your place in it.
  2. Unlock Hidden Potential Stepping out of your comfort zone and into a global classroom reveals strengths and abilities you never knew you had.
  3. Make Lifelong Connections The relationships you build across borders today lay the groundwork for solving tomorrow’s global challenges and open doors to unexpected opportunities.
  4. Invest in Your Future Studying abroad is more than a trip—it’s an investment in your future that pays lifelong dividends, enriching your personal and professional life.
  5. Gain Essential Skills The adaptability, cultural competence, and language proficiency you develop abroad are highly sought after by employers and graduate schools.

Explore the world, expand your horizons, and discover yourself through study abroad with Maryville College.

Study abroad (or Education Abroad) is how we describe any overseas experience that is credit-bearing and takes place abroad! You choose what works for you – study, intern, volunteer abroad!

Follow the “Choose a Program” link below or “Programs” on the right toolbar to explore different options available to you.

How do I study/intern/volunteer abroad?

  • Explore Programs and learn more about field specific information and program types
  • Come to a MC Scots Abroad info session (check Handshake for upcoming events)
  • Talk to the Center for Global Engagement: Fill out the Program Match in our study abroad portal and email us for an appointment
  • Talk to your Academic Advisor about how an education abroad program can fit into your degree plan!
    • Use this Study Abroad Advising Form to start the conversation
  • Talk to Financial Aid
(It’s helpful to understand what your federal and state aid package is now, and what could be available to you for study abroad)
  • Apply to a Program
(deadlines are up to a year in advance)
Note that this is a 2-step process where you complete an MC application and a host program application! Don’t worry – we will help you!
  • Apply for Scholarships
(Study Abroad Scholarships are separate from financial aid – they are offered through the Center for Global Engagement)
  • Prepare for Departure
(We have a class to help you prepare. Register for OVS 203 the semester prior to departure for summer/semester programs)

Not sure about traveling abroad – we also offer Study Away (programs inside the United States) – talk to the Center for Global Engagement to learn more.
