MC Course Delivery Modes

Note: Because each instructor has their own approach, the particulars of any course may vary slightly from the descriptions below. Contact the instructor for specific information if you have questions about their plans for course delivery.

Face-to-Face

Self Service Code: F2F
This is the most traditional delivery mode, in which the class meets face-to-face (in the classroom) during the scheduled class time.

Hy-Flex

Self Service Code: HFX
These courses allow students to meet face-to-face in the classroom or join class using a video conferencing platform (like Zoom).

Real Time Virtual

Self Service Code: RTV
The class meets online using a video conferencing platform (like Zoom) during the scheduled class time.

Online

Self Service Code: ONL
Students complete all their work online on their own time. There are no class meetings to attend.

Web Enhanced

Self Service Code: WBE
These courses are mostly face-to-face (at least 51% of the class sessions meet in-person). Some face-to-face class sessions are replaced by online content that may be synchronous or asynchronous.

Hybrid Asynchronous

Self Service Code: HBA
These courses are mostly digital. At least 51% of the course is delivered asynchronously through a platform like the Tartan. The course occasionally meets face-to-face.

Hybrid Synchronous

Self Service Code: HBS
These courses are mostly digital. At least 51% of the course is delivered synchronously using video conferencing tools. The course occasionally meets face-to-face.

Helpful Terms

Synchronous: instructor-led learning in the virtual environment (using a video conferencing platform); learners and the instructor log in at the same time for class sessions

Asynchronous: allows learners to work on their own time, with no class sessions or meetings required

Tartan: Maryville College uses Blackboard as our LMS (learning management system); we call it “the Tartan” and it houses content such as readings, links to videos, and more

Video Conferencing: using video and audio technology so that two or more people can meet online (using a platform like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Blackboard Collaborate, or Google Meets)
