MC Students

Depending on your role, we will create an individualized work plan where the Center’s needs and your gifts and interests intersect. Some students work as volunteers, some are doing their senior study with us. We expect interns to work on average 5 hours a week.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

As a volunteer you will participate in a student led group to raise mental health awareness on campus through fairs, walks and vigils, educate campus with presentations, guest speakers and student panels, advocate for mental health and support peers.

All Interns and Volunteers

This list is a jumping off point for you to create your own experience. We want you to try everything once. After that, it’s up to you to see what you enjoy and where you feel most impactful. Consider your passions and what you enjoy doing, but also what challenges you and/or could help you build your resume. Your weekly activities could take any of the following forms:

  • Working events and/or giving presentations.
  • Preparing for events by getting supplies together and organized.
  • Making buttons or de-stress kits.
  • Working on blogs or videos.
  • Creating social media content.
  • Planning for upcoming events.
  • Preparing for presentations and workshops.
  • Facilitating peer support groups.
  • Anything else student assistants might be interested in. Bring us any ideas you have! We’ll listen and work with you.

Masters Level Counseling Students

The Maryville College Student Center provides training for those wanting experience in the counseling profession that have a desire to work with college-aged individuals and their specific needs. The internship program provides a well-rounded experience for interns while contributing to the goals of the Counseling Center to promote a warm, supportive environment for students to feel empowered and thrive. Each year, up to four interns are selected from local graduate programs which includes Counseling, Counseling Psychology, and/or Social Work programs.

The Counseling Center will provide regularly scheduled supervision, training, and weekly treatment team meetings. Interns have other opportunities to consult with staff on any issues that may arise and are encouraged to do so.  As the intern’s competence develops, they are encouraged to take on more responsibility and participate in counseling-related activities on campus. Personal and professional growth are encouraged, and the Center strives to provide opportunities to promote special areas of interest.

Interns will get experience in:

  1. Assessments
  2. Diagnosis
  3. Individual therapy
  4. Group therapy
  5. Workshops
  6. Podcasts and social media promotions
  7. Ethical principles, legal, and professional standards
  8. Working with diverse populations
  9. Individual and group supervision
  10. Documentation skills and techniques
