The staff at the Counseling Center are here to support students in managing their lives at college and exploring barriers to being successful both here and in their lives in general.  The team provide a variety of avenues for students to achieve their personal goals while they are here including individual, group, workshops, screenings, consultations, and crisis support.

Claudia Werner

Director of Counseling

Claudia leads staff in providing counseling services and other related activities at the Center and strives to help students in any way she can. She uses her prior experience in different therapeutic environments to ensure that the needs of students are met in a positive way. Claudia enjoys being a resource for faculty and staff in their roles with students. She works with several nearby colleges to maintain master level interns who support the Counseling Center’s goal of helping students. She loves working with students in one-to-one sessions to explore their needs and provide the tools they need to be successful. Claudia believes that therapy is a valuable experience for many reasons and promotes a variety of avenues for students to improve their lives.

Abby is a Master’s-level student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Carson-Newman University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 2023 and has experience working in an intensive outpatient setting, utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to support clients with a variety of concerns. Abby takes an integrative approach to counseling, meeting clients where they are and tailoring her work to each individual’s needs. She values a holistic perspective, attending to both body and mind in the therapeutic process. Abby aims to support clients in understanding their internal experiences and navigating challenging seasons of life through a trauma-informed, collaborative approach. She is passionate about working with college students and is LGBTQIA+ affirming, striving to create an inclusive, nonjudgmental space for all.

Counseling Intern

Davis is a Master’s level student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and minor in Sociology at Belmont University in Nashville. Davis is also a former student-athlete who played soccer for Xavier University and Belmont University. He has previous experience working with vulnerable adults in an inpatient setting. Davis is dedicated to client advocacy, being trauma-informed, and meeting clients where they are. His therapeutic approach is rooted in the holistic self, connecting the systemic to the personal, relationship dynamics, identity development, and is LGBTQ+ affirming. Davis is excited to meet the students at Maryville College and provide a nonjudgmental and supportive space for all.

Counseling Intern

Hannah is a Doctoral level student in the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at Ohio State University in 2020 and her Master’s degree at the University of Tennessee in 2023. Hannah takes an integrative approach to therapy, pulling from a variety of approaches including feminist therapy, person-centered therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. Hannah has experience working in college counseling centers and with Veteran populations. She also has a passion for the outdoors and group interventions and believes in the power of nature and human connection to be therapeutic. She hopes to bring some of this passion and knowledge to Maryville College through nature therapy groups and more. Hannah is looking forward to meeting the students at Maryville College and hopes to foster spaces for wellbeing and connection.

After earning her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee, Taylor is currently advancing her training through a Master’s program at Carson-Newman University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Professional School Counseling. With a commitment to supporting students through life’s transitions, Taylor brings both empathy and community resources into her work. She is passionate about creating a space where individuals feel safe to explore complex emotions, build resilience, and practice self-compassion. She proudly supports LGBTQIA+ identities and is dedicated to creating inclusive care for all.
