Undergraduate First-Year Students

Students talking in outdoor classroom

Maryville College has welcomed international undergraduate students since the mid-1800s, and 1884 was the year our first international student was awarded a Maryville College degree.  We look forward to getting to know you, no matter where you come from!

Basic Admissions Requirements

Typically, Maryville College international students have completed the following basic coursework with good grades prior to admission to Maryville College:

  • Four years of English and two years another language (including your native language)
  • Three or more years of math
  • Two or more years of lab science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.)
  • Two or more years of social science or history

If you have completed ANY post-secondary course work after High School you are considered a Transfer Student. A transfer applicant is a student who has enrolled in a regular session at a college or university following high school. Students who meet this definition cannot disregard their college records and apply as first-year. Neglecting to send complete transcripts—even for courses you don’t want to transfer in—is considered falsifying your academic record and will jeopardize your chance of being admitted.

Standardized Tests: SAT/ACT Scores

SAT and ACT scores are NOT required for international applicants. We have a test-optional policy for international students.  This means that you can decide if you want to send SAT/ACT scores to us. You must decide whether or not your test results are an accurate representation of your academic ability and potential.  If you want to send us your scores, Maryville’s test codes are SAT: 1454, ACT: 3988

Language Proficiency

The language of instruction at Maryville College is English. If English isn’t an official language in your country and your first language, you may need to complete an English proficiency test. Find our English Language Proficiency Requirements here.

How to Apply for Admission

We do not have a deadline for applications, but recommend that you complete the application process at least three (3) months before you wish to begin.  This allows enough time to get your student visa and make travel arrangements.  Our classes begin in mid-August (Fall semester) and early-January (Spring semester).   We have an easy, two-step application process:

Please submit:

  1. Application form (online MVP Portal).
  2. Official/certified copies of high school/university
-Transcripts or statement of marks of all secondary and post-secondary education, translated into English.

-Any National Exam Results (if your country has a national examination system – for example WASSCE/WAEC). (also must be officially translated in English
    – Copies should be certified by a school official.

While admission to Maryville College is need-blind, we require proof of funding during the application process to ensure that admitted students are prepared to meet the full cost of attendance not covered by scholarships. This includes living expenses, books, fees, and personal costs.

Maryville College has a strong scholarship program for international students, and all admitted degree-seeking international students receive an academic scholarship, which is automatically applied toward tuition. Scholarship awards typically range from $15,000 to $26,000 per year.  (approximately 50 – 65% of tuition)

However, there is no financial aid available to cover living costs or fees. You must be prepared to show at least $32,000 in available funds at the time of application. Applications will not be reviewed without proof of funding.

What Do We Consider Official Records?

All academic records sent to Maryville College directly from the institution attended are considered to be official records. All records must be original or certified copies with the seal of the issuing institution or signed by an appropriate authority.

All international documents must be translated into English.

What is an Official transcript?

An official transcript is one that is sent directly from the attended institution to Maryville College in the original sealed envelope and on the official paper of the school. If the school does not issue official transcripts but only gives the student a diploma and mark sheet at the time of graduation, Maryville College must receive a certified copy of the documents.

What is a Certified copy?

A certified copy is a document that has been verified by a prothonotary of the court (the equivalent of a Notary Public in the U.S.). The prothonotary of the court will verify that they have seen the original document by taking a copy of it and then certify that it is a true copy of the original.
For international students already in the U.S. who may have difficulty getting transcripts due to political situations in their countries, but have an original copy in their possession, university officials (Notary) will review the documents, make photocopies and initial that they are originals. For internal purposes, this is considered a certified copy.

What is a Certified Translation?

  • Translations issued or verified by the issuing institution, or translated by a member of ATA (American Translators Association).
  • Translations issued by the Ministry of Education (translations done by other government ministries are not valid).
  • For Iran only: Translations issued by the Ministry of Justice.
  • Translations completed by National Center for Interpretation Services or by a NACES member (Evaluations must be accompanied by the original transcript. Evaluations submitted without a transcript will be considered unofficial).
