Transfer Students

This section contains information for international students who have already completed some undergraduate coursework*, either in the United States or abroad and who do  NOT need further English training before entering university level programs.

*A transfer applicant is a student who has enrolled in a regular session at a college or university following high school. Students who meet this definition cannot disregard their college records and apply as first-year. Neglecting to send complete transcripts—even for courses you don’t want to transfer in—is considered falsifying your academic record and will jeopardize your chance of being admitted.

If you do not yet have results from an English proficiency exam, or you want us to test you, please see information about our conditional admissions process.

Basic Transfer Admissions Requirements

Students who have completed coursework at another accredited college or university may be considered for admission to Maryville College in either the fall or spring semester. Generally, academic courses in which the student has earned a grade of “C” or above may be transferred and applied toward graduation requirements. College credits will be evaluated upon receipt of an official college transcript. Applicants are provided with an estimate of transfer credit upon request.  Generally, applicants wishing to transfer from other U.S. institutions of higher education should have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5.

Transfer applications from colleges and universities are evaluated under the following guidelines:

  • Applicants with 24+ semester hours or more in college-level academic coursework should have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.50. High school transcripts are not required of students who meet these standards.
  • Applicants who have earned less than 24 semester hours in college-level work should have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 in college-level academic work and present a transcript of high school work, national exams (if applicable) and any standardized test scores that they may have (TOEFL, IELTS, iTE, SAT, ACT, etc.)

Transfer credit will be awarded from institutions of higher education outside the U.S.  on a case-by-case basis.

How to Apply for Admission

We do not have a deadline for applications, but recommend that you complete the application process at least three (3) months before you wish to begin.  This allows enough time to get your student visa and make travel arrangements.  Our classes begin in mid-August (Fall semester) and early-January (Spring semester).   We have an easy, two-step application process:

Please submit:

  2. Official/certified copies of University Transcripts
    – Transcripts in English
    – Don’t forget to submit high school trnascripts and any National Exam Results if you have taken less than 24 credits (less than 1 year on average)
    – Copies should be certified by a school official.
    – We may also ask you to send your records to an outside International Credential Evaluator.
    See Transcript Requirements below
  3. A personal statement or resume that discusses the student’s goals and reasons for choosing to study at Maryville College
  4. Proof of Language Proficiency: This may be done by meeting our language proficiency requirements or through conditional admission.
  5. OPTIONAL: We have a Test Optional Policy for Standardized Tests like ACT/SAT.  Students are not required to submit scores, but you may choose to send SAT or ACT results. (Maryville’s test codes are SAT: 1454, ACT: 3988)

Please send an email to international@maryvillecollege.edu if you have any questions.

We will evaluate applications for admission once all materials have been received.  We also strongly recommend that you submit proof of finances (see second step below) at the time of application.

What Do We Consider Official Records?

All academic records sent to Maryville College directly from the institution attended are considered to be official records. All records must be original or certified copies with the seal of the issuing institution or signed by an appropriate authority.

All international documents must be translated into English.

What is an Official transcript?

An official transcript is one that is sent directly from the attended university to Maryville College in the original sealed envelope and on the official paper of the school. If the institution does not issue official transcripts but only gives the student a diploma and mark sheet at the time of graduation, Maryville College must receive a certified copy of the documents.

What is a Certified copy?

A certified copy is a document that has been verified by a prothonotary of the court (the equivalent of a Notary Public in the U.S.). The prothonotary of the court will verify that they have seen the original document by taking a copy of it and then certify that it is a true copy of the original.
For international students already in the U.S. who may have difficulty getting transcripts due to political situations in their countries, but have an original copy in their possession, university officials (Notary) will review the documents, make photocopies and initial that they are originals. For internal purposes, this is considered a certified copy.

What is a Certified Translation?

  • Translations issued or verified by the issuing institution, or translated by a member of ATA (American Translators Association).
  • Translations issued by the Ministry of Education (translations done by other government ministries are not valid).
  • For Iran only: Translations issued by the Ministry of Justice.
  • Translations completed by National Center for Interpretation Services or by a NACES member (Evaluations must be accompanied by the original transcript. Evaluations submitted without a transcript will be considered unofficial).
