Study Away – Domestic Travel Opportunities

Study Away (U.S.A. Travel) Programs

Learn more about Study Away programs through the Center for Global Engagement (at International House).  Study Away programs offer MC sophomores, juniors, and seniors alternate study environments in various places in the United States, while earning credit towards their degree.

May-term Faculty-led Study Away Programs

The programs have experiential learning as the focus and are typically two- to three-weeks in length. Programs and destinations vary from year to year and there are options to suit most degrees.  Most opportunities to travel are in May-term.

Fit.Green.Happy.® and Small Places in Appalachia

We don’t think much about Appalachian – the region where we live. Living in a small urban place, we also don’t think much about our rural neighbors. Yet small rural places in Appalachia hold critical importance. And they also lend themselves to the concepts imbedded in Fit.Green.Happy.® .This road trip takes us to 4 of those places. We will learn an overview of the place; how their economy works, what the outdoor/natural assets are, what’s important to the local people and more.

Estimated Cost: $430 program fee.

Estimated Additional Expenses: $475 (meals, events)

*pricing subject to change based on minimum participants.

Outcomes
  • Participants will increase their awareness and appreciation for our region
  • Participants will learn how small places transition their local economies to take advantage of natural resources
  • Participants will participate in some of those activities
  • Participants will experience the outdoors
  • Participants will meet and talk with local residents to learn about the values of their community
  • Participants will experience local Appalachian food.
The Places

Polk County/Benton, TN, Erwin, TN, Galax, VA, and Hancock County, TN

Highlights
  • In March 2022 we will meet for an introduction/orientation to the course. Small student teams will be assigned.
  • Small student groups will be responsible for each place. Responsibilities include:
    • Understanding the fundamental questions for the place. These will be based on OST 302 content.
    • Teaching others the main story of the place (e.g. Polk County transitioned from an environmentally unsound and polluting copper mine employer to a thriving whitewater industry). This includes on-going challenges for the community.
    • Acting as hosts and liaisons, including conversations involving fundamental questions.
    • Documenting the experience for the final project.
    • Leading discussions.
  • As far as possible we will travel via backroads from place to place. We hope to use 1 15 passenger van.
  • We will stay in churches. We also plan to eat 1 meal/day with them.
  • We will experience the outdoor recreation opportunities of the place (e.g., rafting, hiking, running) as much as possible.
  • We will provide a daily frilutsliv practice time (go outside with no purpose). We might teach mindfulness/meditation /relaxation techniques.
  • We will provide “place time” or “Town time” as appropriate.
  • Knowing the importance of ‘spending locally’, we will determine how much we spend locally in each place.
